A recent Wall Street Journal article discussed why such a large number of individuals have problems securing their own Social Security Disability Benefits when they are disabled.

It turns out 7.4 million people in the United States are receiving Social Security Disability Benefits, and the number of individuals applying has risen dramatically since 1999. Our poor economy is not helping any in lowering these numbers – many workers have been laid off from their jobs and are forced to apply for Social Security Disability compensation just to make ends meet in terms of paying their bills and their medical expenses.

The article made very clear that individuals should research what Social Security Disability Benefits cover, and what steps must be adhered to in order to receive them. Without knowing what you are applying for and what information you must supply in the paperwork when you apply, it can restrict the benefits you receive, or make it so you receive no benefits at all even if you qualify.

In addition, the article said that many individuals wait far too long to file for Social Security Disability Benefits. Filing a claim can take up to 100 days, which is something a lot of people don’t think about when they become disabled. In addition, there can also be a five-month waiting period between the time an individual is listed as qualifying and the first check is received, and health care can take even longer. If you need money to help with your medical expenses you should file a Social Security Disability claim as quickly as possible to begin receiving the compensation you need and deserve.

The article also mentions that you must be prepared and persistent when filing your Social Security Disability Benefits claim. Often time this means hiring a lawyer to help you find and fill out the necessary paperwork and to fight in court for as long as it takes for you to get your qualification. Many individuals try to apply on their own the first time and after they are rejected they hire a lawyer to help them with their claim, wasting numerous precious months without receiving compensation. Because of this, it is recommended that people hire a lawyer from the onset to make the process as quick and painless as possible.
